What to do in the Basque Country Events Agenda May 2017

Our selection of best art, sport and cultural events in the Basque Country during May, 2017.

Best traditions & festivities:

• In Ujue, Navarre. Religious Pilgrimage which dates back to 1043 A.D. On May 1^st.
• In Gernika, Biscay. Anchovie day. Spring is the time for anchovies and being Gernika a big Basque fishermen port, this is one of the best moments to visit this village and taste anchovies with a local txakoli of Biscay. On May 6^th.
• In Idiazabal, Gipuzkoa. Idiazabal Cheese Day. Contest and fair of Basque sheep cheeses in the city which gives the name to the Denomination of Origin of this Basque delicacy. On May 7^th.
• In Gernika, Bizkaia. Medieval Market. In addition to the Anchovie Day, a lot of events for all the family members. From May 7^th to 8^th. 
• In Gernika, Bizcay. Fisherman Day. May 8^th.
• In Balmaseda, Bizkaia. Medieval Market. It is done in commemoration of its foundation. It is the first Villa of Bizkaia. From May 13^rd to 14^th.
• In Dicastillo, Navarre. Asparragus Day. See and taste best of Spanish asparragus produced in the South of Navarre. May 21^st.
• In Kuartango, Alava. Mushroom and cattle day. Cattle exhibit and local mushrooms in this lively fair. On May 14^th.
• In Bermeo, Biscay. Fish market in one of the biggest ports of the North of Spain. A good opportunity to try also fishes and preparations not so common in the Basque Country. Lamera Park. On May 19^th to 21^nd.
• In Ordizia, Gipuzkoa. Medieval Market. This village close to San Sebastian and Vitoria-Gasteiz with a Wednesday market dating back more than 500 years ago, is perfect for a Medieval Market. Go and see it! On May 13^rd and 14^th.
• In Amurrio, Araba. Txakoli Wine Day. Best local white wines of Arabako Txakolina and an interesting food contest using the local white wine. May 21^st.
• In Antoñana. Spring fair of honey. Competition, tasting, sale of honey and artisan products. Exhibition of crafts. May 21^st.
• In Vitoria. Napoleonic market of Lakua Arriaga. This year will have more than 100 craft positions, theatrical performances and music. May 21^st until 27^th.
• In San Sebastian. Gastropote. Market of San Martín. Gastronomy and live performances. Every Thursday of the year between 19.00 and 22.00.

• In Bilbao. Anne Sofie Von Otter and Brooklyn Rider. Anne-Sofie von Otter, is regarded by critics as one of the best mezzosoprano of her generation. Broklyn Rider are four classical musicians who play with the energy of young rock stars.Arriaga Theatre. May 25^th.
• In Vitoria-Gasteiz. International Festival "Poets in May". There are local and foreign poets, associations, workshops, musical groups, actresses and actors, singers and artists of music and dance. May 27^th.
• In Bilbao. “The Guardian of the Tales”. Opera for children. May 27^th to 29^th.
• In Bilbao. Guns N'Roses Band: “Not in this lifetime tours”. Guns N'Roses return to the capital of Bilbao to perform in one of their only two performances in Spain. St. Mames Stadium. May 30^th.

Regarding sport:
• In Vitoria-Gasteiz. Araba Rugby Cup. It is the main event of the quarry rugby in Spain, with visitors from France and Portugal. May 6^th & 7^th.
• In Vitoria-Gasteiz. Martin Fiz Marathon. A popular run with options for kids, shorter versions and even a skate race. On May 14^th.
• In Leintz-gatzaga. PUNTAIK PUNTA. Debagoiena Walking Festival. First festival of hiking of the Basque Country. May 19^th to 21^th.
• In Bilbao, Triathlon 1.9km swimming in Nervion River, 90km riding in a bike & 21km along the streets of Bilbao city. On May 20^th.
• In Vitoria-Gasteiz. Oxfarm Intermon Trail Walker Euskadi. A walking tour of 100 km that will include the Ullibarri reservoir and the Montes de Vitoria, to be performed as a team in a maximum time of 32 hours. May 20^th and 21^st.
• In Biarritz. 2017 International Surf Association: World Surfing Games. France, May 21^st to 28^th.
• In Vitoria-Gasteiz. Orbea Race. Cycle tour by road. Organized by Juan Carlos Nájera. Provision of 6,000 participants. May 27^th.
• In Zegama. Alpine Marathon along the Aizkorri Mountains (qualified for Skyrunner World Series). More than 42 kilometers, it leaves from Zegama and runs through the mountains of Aizkorri. On May 28^th.
