Rioja wine. What can I expect? (1)

Rioja is one of the most popular Spanish wine destination. Many wineries are open to public and their wines have found a space all over the world.

In my private tours in Rioja I often have to explain about some general aspects of Rioja wine that I wanted to clarify here.

One popular question comes about the quality of the wines and their aging.

Rioja is with its quality control board: the "Qualified Designation of Origin", controls all wines in the area and certifies it as:

  • Gran Reserva. When the wine have been oak-aging longer. For a minimum of 24 months in the barrel and a minimum of 36 months in the bottle.
  • Reserva. When the wine have been a minimum of 12 months in the barrel and a minimum of 36 months of total aging (in bottle and barrel together).
  • Crianza. When the wine have been a minimum of 12 months in the barrel and a minimum of 24 months of total aging (in bottle and barrel together).
  • Vino joven, Vino de Autor or Rioja. There is no minimals on aging. In the last years, some wineries though have started to use this certificate to be free on their aging process and innovate on flavours.

Of course, the longer period in barrel would mean higher oak content and better aging.
Grapes for Gran Reserva are specially selected and Gran Reserva wines can be cellared for up to 30 years.
