Spain will be host of the Basketball World Cup 2014. Main venue will be Madrid, but there will be also other venues in Spain: Granada & Sevilla in Andalusia, Las Palmas in Canary Islands, Barcelona in Catalonia and Bilbao in the Basque Country.
Basketball in the Basque Country started to become popular in the 90's with Baskonia, the Basket team of Vitoria-Gasteiz. Due to the strong presence of Laboral Kutxa - Baskonia since the 90's (in Euroleague and being the 3rd Spanish Basketball team in number of final appearances), the Basque fans of Basketball increased.
And nowadays there are three Basketball teams playing in ACB Liga Endesa: Laboral Kutxa Baskonia, Bilbao Basket and Gipuzkoa Basket.
Taking in consideration the big number of Basketball fans in the region, Bilbao will be one of the hosts of FIBA Basketball World Cup to be hold from August 30th to September 14th.
Bilbao Exhibition Center will host teams of USA, Turkey, Finland, New Zealand, Ukraine and Dominican Republic.
