Beethoven composition over Vitoria

"The Battle of Vitoria" or "Wellingtons Sieg oder die Schlacht bei Vittoria" Opus 91 is Ludwig van Beethoven's tribute to the important battle hold in Vitoria between Napoleon's French army and the British and Portuguese forces.

This battle marked a hit on the end of the French ocupation of Spain and for some people marked the end of the times of Napoleon.

One of the persons who saw the importance of this battle was Ludwig van Beethoven.

He shows in this orchestral work his love to Britain for example with parts of it featuring "Rule Britannia".

Some people believe, wrongly, that this piece was made to conmemorate the Battle of Waterloo.

Do you want to see the house where Napoleon slept or met a local novel. You can ask me for a private tour to hear this and more stories about Vitoria-Gasteiz and the Basque Country.
